Message from NHCS Superintendent

In light of recent events, I felt it important to reach out to our school community.

Please know that the safety and security of our students is our first priority.  As a part of our ongoing efforts, we met with the Indiana State Police examining our overall security and procedures.  Any time we have a perceived threat we involve probation, local law enforcement, and our ISP security.  We have a great working relationship with our first responders and meet regularly with them as well.  We also have revised our plans with principals at the building level to reflect any new trends that we gather from our school security conferences.  We have had a variety of drills and will be communicating more information to the students.  As you would guess, there are different instructions for different buildings, grade levels, and maturities.

I know that you share in our deep sorrow for the families impacted by the tragic events.  We want our students to feel safe and to know that we are having these discussions.  Regrettably we understand that these are conversations parents are having to have at home with their children.  ?We know that in a time of emergency that our students will look to us for direction.  We encourage our students to report any concerns they may have.  "See Something, Say Something" is the approach taken ?b?y ?NHCS and ?many? other? districts.  We feel this approach has been a success and have been very pleased with our students in this effort.  Any reports ?that ?we have received from students have been received within minutes of that ?same ?student seeing? or ?hearing something.  All reports or concerns are investigated.   Please know that every staff member at NHCS works to establish the kind of relationships with our students that will allow ?our schools? to meet the needs of every child, allow them to feel a part of the larger school community, and allow us to see the warning signs of future concern.

Should the need arise we will communicate information to you via School Messenger.  Please make sure your school contact information is up to date.  We recognize that school safety is a shared responsibility of students, staff, and the school community.  We make every effort to be proactive.  If you have a concern we encourage you to contact your child's school immediately.

Thank you for your support of the North Harrison Community Schools.

Lance Richards, Ed.D.
