Mrs. Knight and Mrs. Seacat visited the Borders Bookstore in Louisville, Kentucky, and were very excited about meeting a renowned children's author and illustrator, Jan Brett. Jan Brett gave a 30 minute book talk about her 20th Anniversary Edition of  THE MITTEN telling a personal story about where her idea came from for authoring the book. After her book talk, she drew the character of the bear in the story. She explained how she draws the animal's facial expressions and how to express emotions using the animal's eyes in drawings. Her sketching tips were fantastic! Borders Bookstore served cookies, coffee and hot chocolate to parents and children while we were waiting in line to have books signed. Jan Brett's husband talked with parents and children and passed out flyers and special buttons as gifts. The first 100 people also got to take home a autographed full size poster of one of Jan Brett's book covers.

Hedgie, the hedgehog, one of Jan Brett's personal, favorite characters from her stories, made a special appearance and walked around to meet all of the children. Eli, a North Harrison Elementary student, along with his mom and grandmother, also visited with Jan Brett and had books signed by her. A special award of eating lunch on the bus with Jan Brett was an earlier reward for signing up on her website. If you want to see and learn more about Jan Brett visit her website. She shows how to draw some of her storybook characters and has many interactive things for children to do on the computer.
