General Information about North Harrison Middle School
- CLASS SCHEDULE (8:20-3:15) - There are
eight forty-minute class periods daily, plus PAWS class; a thirty-minute
lunch; and five-minute passing periods.
-
- BREAKFAST/LUNCH - Breakfasts and lunches are
available to all students. Students
will pay the regular daily price, reduced price, or receive free breakfasts
and lunches, depending upon the ability of the family to pay as determined
from the lunch application submitted. Parents
may send money to establish a cafeteria account.
-
- LOCKERS/LOCKS - Each student will be assigned
two lockers. The school strongly
recommends that students have a school
lock on their locker to protect books, coats, and other valuables from
theft. Locks must be purchased
in the school office and may then be used through middle and high school.
Locks purchased at the upper elementary may also be used on middle
school lockers.
-
- ASSIGNMENT BOOK - Each student will have an
assignment book to record each day's class assignments.
Students are expected to take this assignment book to every class
except PE, and record each assignment.
-
- STUDENT ACTIVITIES - Activities include athletics,
music contests and concerts, dances, academic competitions, assembly
programs, PAWS activities, yearbook staff, student council, junior honor
society, and a talent show. Students
participating in athletics must have physical exam forms signed by a
physician and by parents. Many
of our activities will have special rules for participation.
-
- DRESS CODE - NHMS has a dress code that
stresses that students dress modestly for school. Students are becoming young women and men.
Some fashions that were appropriate in elementary and upper
elementary are no longer appropriate as students mature.
Short shorts, bare midriffs, mesh tops, halter tops and short skirts
are some styles that are prohibited at NHMS.
Clothing and jewelry should not portray items that are questionable
in taste, or illegal for minors to possess.
The school dress code is listed on an accompanying handout and
in the student assignment book.
-
- SNACKS/DRINKS - Time to purchase snacks and/or
drinks will be very limited. No
snacks or drinks will be permitted in the classroom unless there is a
special occasion. No snacks or
drinks are to be consumed on the buses.
-
- PERSONAL PROPERTY - Students should not bring
radios, tape players, CD players, or cameras; nor should they bring toys,
stuffed animals, trading cards, and other items not used for school
purposes. Expensive jewelry and
large sums of money should not be brought to school.
Clothing, books, and personal items should be clearly marked with the
student's name.
-
- SCHOOL CONDUCT RULES – During the first week of
school in the fall we will discuss with students our school rules and
regulations, as well as applicable state and federal laws governing schools
and their students.
-
- ORIENTATION- An orientation meeting
will be scheduled for one night in early August to discuss this information
with next year’s seventh grade students and their parents.
The date and time of the meeting will be announced in local papers in
late July or early August. We
hope all parents and students can attend this orientation meeting.
-
- HOMEWORK- Traditionally, there will be
more homework expected for students each school year. Students must assume responsibility for recording homework
assignments in their assignment books, for completing those assignments on
time. Homework assignments are
posted by each teacher on the Homework Hero section of the school website (www.nhcs.k12.in.us)
-
- BOOKBAGS, BACKPACKS- With an emphasis on the safety
and health of our students, restrictions have been placed on book bags,
athletic bags, PE bags, and other carry bags. NHMS students will not be
allowed to carry book bags, backpacks, or other carry bags from class to
class. Students may bring
these to school, but must carry them from the bus, or other vehicle, to
their locker immediately upon arrival at school.
All bags are to be kept in the student’s locker during the school
day. The carrying bags may be
used to carry books and other school materials to the bus, other vehicle, or
to an after school practice or meeting location at the end of the school
day. Students may not carry
bags during the school day except to
carry physical education clothes to and from their PE class.
At the conclusion of the PE class, the bag is to be returned to the
student’s locker.
